Wednesday, Jan18

Good morning to you, today is Wednesday, January 18, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of satire, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Wednesday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Election
Huntsman is out of the race, which is no real big loss.  He has however put his support behind Romney.  I just wonder how this is going to affect Romney’s popularity.  Did you watch the debate last night?  I was unable to as I was at work but from the tweets I have seen Gingrich was the big winner.

Football
Ravens, Patriots, Giants and 49ers were the big winners this weekend in the NFL playoffs.

Celebrity News
The famous southern cook Paula Dean has announced yesterday that she has type 2 diabities.

WikiNoGo – Fox News
SAN FRANCISCO –  Can the world live without Wikipedia for a day? The shutdown of one of the Internet's most-visited sites is not sitting well with some of its volunteer editors, who say the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.
"My main concern is that it puts the organization in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said editor Robert Lawton, a Michigan computer consultant who would prefer that the encyclopedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge. "Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."
Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time Tuesday and the organization said it would stay down for 24 hours.
Instead of encyclopedia articles, visitors to the site saw a stark black-and-white page with the message: "Imagine a world without free knowledge." It carried a link to information about the two congressional bills and details about how to reach lawmakers.

Can You Hear Me Now? – Fox News
BALTIMORE – Serious injuries involving pedestrians wearing headphones have more than tripled since 2004, a U.S. study showed.
Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people often were hit by vehicles because their music blocked out horns or sirens alerting them to danger.
In 70 percent of cases, the headphone-wearing pedestrians died as a result of the injuries they sustained from being hit by traffic.
The researchers studied the data of 116 accidents involving pedestrians wearing headphones between 2004 and 2011. The number of incidents rose from 16 in 2004 to 47 in 2011.
"Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears," lead author Dr. Richard Lichenstein said. "Unfortunately, as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases."
The study, published in the journal Injury Prevention, found that young men were most at risk, with 68 percent of the 116 victims being male and 67 percent under the age of 30.
Plastic Underwear – New York Times
KITZBÜHEL, Austria — The latest front in nefarious performance enhancement in sports: underwear.
A fit of confusion has spread through competitive skiing in recent days after a Slovene skier who finished second at a major event in Austria was accused of wearing plastic undergarments that might have given her an unfair aerodynamic advantage. The Swiss ski federation lodged a complaint with the sport’s governing body, and an examination of the skier’s underwear was conducted. Fruit of the Loom these were not.
A ruling was made over the weekend: the clothing was permissible, though officials advised female skiers not to wear it because of health concerns. Apparently the amount of plastic in the underwear might prevent a skier’s skin from breathing properly.
The ruling, however, did not extinguish the dispute; it has merely moved to the men’s side of professional skiing.

Chicken Nuggets – Fox News
Burbank, Calif. –  A Los Angeles woman was arrested last week for offering sexual favors in exchange for chicken McNuggets, according to Burbank police.
Khadijah Baseer of Los Angeles allegedly opened customers’ car doors while they were in the drive-thru of a Burbank McDonald's.
A witness reported Baseer's activity to police and she was arrested on suspicion of prostitution.

Burger Delivery – USA Today
Burger King, the No. 2 burger chain, has quietly begun testing home delivery of its burgers, fries and other sandwiches since fall at four of its restaurants in the greater Washington, D.C., area, with an eye on expanding beyond that.
Should home delivery catch on for the burger giants — as it has for the pizza kingpins — it could be an industry changer. But it runs counter to long-held consumer perception that fast-food burgers and fries travel poorly — and don't warm up well in the microwave. It also would require millions of hungry folks to change their at-home eating habits. "There are some real food-quality issues here," says Ron Paul, president of research firm Technomic. "But there's no question that consumer expectation for having things delivered has risen."
