Tuesday, Jan31 / Big Boy, Crazy Granny, Home Improvement

Good morning to you, today is Tuesday, January 31, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of satire, the purveyor of non-pertinent information and as always the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Tuesday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Election
The Florida primary is today and most polls suggest that Mitt Romney will prevail in this race.  Stay tuned tomorrow for the official results.  The next contest for these Presidential hopefuls will be Nevada and Maine on the 4th of February.

Big Boy
DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa woman has given birth to a boy weighing 13 pounds and 13 ounces – without the aid of surgery.
Asher Stewardson was born Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, measuring 23 1/2 inches long. Fifteen months ago, his brother, Judah, arrived weighing 12 pounds and an ounce at birth.
Mercy officials say only a tenth of 1 percent of all newborns weigh more than 11 pounds at birth.
The boys' mother, Kendall Stewardson, endured six hours of labor without an epidural injection. She says she and her husband, Joshua, wanted to avoid cesarean delivery because that wouldn't have been good for her or Asher.

(This is supposedly a true account recorded in the Police Log of Sarasota, Florida.)

An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and, upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle.
She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her lungs, "I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!"

The four men didn't wait for a second threat. They got out and ran like mad.
The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver's seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition.
She tried and tried, and then she realized why. It was for the same reason that she had wondered why there was a football, a Frisbee and two 12-packs of beer in the front seat.
A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or five spaces further down.
She loaded her bags into the car and drove to the police station to report her mistake.
The sergeant to whom she told the story couldn't stop laughing.
He pointed to the end of the counter, where four pale man were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun.
No charges were filed.
Moral of the story? If you're going to have a senior moment...make it memorable.
(Editor’s note) I have no clue as to the origin of this story, however according to Snoops.com it is true.

9 Home Improvement Tips
Repurpose A Shutter
Turn old shutters into wall-mounted magazine holders to keep paper clutter at bay.

Add Trim To Window Shades
Sewing on a decorative trim to window shades is an easy way to dress up your windows without purchasing new expensive drapes.

Replace A Showerhead
In case hard water has caused your showerhead to calcify, or if it's just time to upgrade, keep these important tips in mind when buying (or replacing) a new showerhead.

Clean Out The Dryer Duct
The lint, dust and debris that collects in your dryer duct can build up over time and become a fire hazard.

Install Key Chain Hooks
An alternative to a catchall for keys is to nail a few hooks on the wall near the entrance so that you can hang your keys up every time you enter or leave the house.

Caulk And Seal Gaps
Caulking or sealing gaps along edges and between tiles in the shower and bath will keep it looking new. And it's an easy and cost effective task that will definitely pay off in the long run.

Paint An Accent Wall
Create an instant focal point in a room with an accent wall. It's cost-effective and will dramatically change the look of a room. If you happen to have leftover paint, this is a great way to make use of it.

Make A Tool Wall
Use a pegboard to organize all your household tools and gadgets. It's a neat alternative to overstuffed toolboxes.

Clean The Fireplace
If you have a fireplace, don't let ash streaks and messy soot take over, especially during these cold months. Give it a good, quick cleaning.

Friday, Jan27 / Clinton, Clown Robber, Wedding Gift, Random Tweets

Good morning to you, today is Friday, January 27, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of satire, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the TGI Friday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Hillary Steppin Down
Hillary Clinton has said she wants to step off the "high wire of American politics", again quashing speculation that she might stay in government if Barack Obama wins a second term in the White House.
She told state department employees on Thursday she was ready for a rest and is paying no attention to the Republican presidential candidate debates. She said she wanted to find out how tired she was after being first lady, senator, aspiring presidential candidate and finally the US secretary of state.
"I have made it clear that I will certainly stay on until the president nominates someone and that transition can occur [if Obama wins re-election," she told a meeting. "But I think after 20 years, and it will be 20 years, of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am."

Robber nabbed by 80 year old man
The owner of an Oak Park market fought back against a clown mask-wearing robber, chasing the armed suspect from the store within seconds and snagging an important clue for investigators.
Surveillance video showed the encounter between 80-year-old Baldev Dhillon and the unidentified suspect unfold quickly inside Dhillon’s business, clearly showing the suspect aim a gun at Dhillon as he stepped into the store.
Dhillon’s entire family, including two young grandchildren, was inside the store as the robbery took place.
“My legs were shivering,” said 11-year-old Hirdayjot Dhillon.
As the robber closed in on the store own, Baldev Dhillon hardly flinched before grabbing for the gun, throwing the suspect off balance. The suspect backpedaled quickly as Dhillon pressed his counter-attack and then fled altogether as the store owner grabbed the clown mask by its long dreadlocks, yanking the mask off his head.
Family members said they heard the click of the trigger as the robber tried to shoot, but the gun never fired.
Police believe the suspect is the same man who robbed two stores on January 19 while wearing the same mask. Shots were fired in both incidents, but no injuries were reported.
Bikram Dhillon, the son of the business owner, said he isn’t surprised his father jumped into action so quickly — he served as a police chief in India for 30 years.
“If somebody threatens his family, he will fight,” Bikram said.

Ultimate Wedding Gift
A bride who was in desperate need of a kidney transplant is looking forward to married life after the best man at her wedding was found to be the perfect match.
Leanne Stefanovic, 31, needed dialysis for nine hours every day and was constantly tired after suffering kidney failure for the past four years.
But now, she is recovering after a successful transplant in Leeds thanks to her new husband’s best friend Stuart Kilgannon, 39, who donated one of his kidneys.

Thursday, Jan26 / Mom Havin Sex, Lindsay Lohan, Not So Death Row,

Good morning to you, today is Thursday, January 26, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of satire, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Thursday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Teen Reported Mom for Having Sex
A Florida teenager called 911 last week to ask police to place her in a children’s shelter because she “heard her mother having sex.”
The 15-year-old girl felt disrespected when overhearing her mother having sex late one night, so she called Panama City police to report the situation, The Smoking Gun first reported on its website.
When police arrived at the home in the early hours on Jan. 19, the girl’s mother explained that she was with her boyfriend and didn't intend to wake her daughter. But their bedrooms are right next to each other, according to the police report, which was obtained by FoxNews.com.
At some point, the mother and daughter had an argument, the police report said.
The teen, who told police that there was no abuse, originally asked to be taken to the Hidle House, which is a temporary home for children who are homeless or abused. But after speaking with a representative, she decided it was almost time for school and decided to stay put.
A domestic rights brochure was left for the family, the police report said.

Lohan In The News Again – Huffington Post
LOS ANGELES -- Lindsay Lohan's bad luck with cars continues after a woman who claims she was struck by the actress' sports car sued over her injuries Wednesday. Nubia Del Carmen Preza claims she was struck by Lohan's Maserati while walking through a West Hollywood intersection in September 2010.
Preza's lawsuit states she has suffered "disabling and serious personal injuries, pain, suffering and anguish" and that she is seeking damages for all her medical expenses and lost time at work. A call to her attorney, Gregory Picco, seeking additional details was not immediately returned.
It is the second lawsuit filed against Lohan this month involving an automobile mishap. A paparazzo sued Lohan Jan. 10, claiming that he was struck in January 2010 by a vehicle in which Lohan was riding. Grigor Balyan claims he was trying to shoot pictures of the actress in Hollywowhen he was hit.
Preza's lawsuit states Lohan was driving when she was hit on the afternoon of Sept. 1, 2010, at an intersection just south of the Sunset Strip. At the time, Lohan lived near the intersection.

Not so Death Row
Danny Robbie Hembree considers himself a gentleman of leisure. He enjoys color TV, air conditioning and abundant food. He naps pretty much whenever he feels like it.
He also happens to live on death row at Central Prison in Raleigh, N.C. But that’s not a bad thing, he wrote in a taunting letter to his hometown newspaper, the Gaston Gazette.
In fact, Hembree wrote, the state of North Carolina has taken the "death" out of death row.
"Kill me if you can, suckers. Ha! Ha! Ha!" Hembree gloated in his letter, portions of which were published by the Gazette on Tuesday.
Hembree, 50, was sentenced to death in November for suffocating a 17-year-old girl in 2009, and is also accused of killing two other North Carolina women. But no one has been executed in the state since 2006 because of legal challenges over lethal injections and whether a physician must oversee executions.
"Is the public aware that the chances of my lawful murder taking place in the next 20 years if ever are very slim?" Hembree wrote on lined notebook paper in what he described as an editorial.
Meanwhile, life is sweet. "Is the public aware I am a gentleman of leisure, watching color TV in the A.C., reading, taking naps at will, eating three well-balanced meals a day?" he wrote.
Oh, and he also receives free government healthcare, he pointed out.
The man who prosecuted Hembree, Gaston County Dist. Atty. Locke Bell, was not amused.

11 Year Old Good Samaritan
Honey Brook’s Conner Haines is a young man who has not hesitated in tapping into his potential. The eleven-year-old has a love for computers and games, particularly the popular programs known as ‘apps’ (short for applications) which are found on smartphones and tablet devices such as the iPhone and iPad. His tech savvy is such that he decided to undertake learning how to create apps of his own, and his heart is such that he has chosen to use his ability at creating apps to raise money to help kids with cancer.
Conner and his mother, Dawn Haines, have begun this process by laying the groundwork for the creation of Conner’s non-profit organization, BElieve, which encourages 5-12 year old cancer patients to send their ideas for apps to Conner for development. In turn, Conner will sell these apps through Apple and donate the money raised to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The only caveat, according to Conner’s Web site, www.flipflopgames.com, is “Please make sure the idea of the game is not too hard for me to develop. I’m only 11 years old, thanks.”

Adoption Refund – Huffington Post
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- An American woman who sent her adopted Russian son back to Moscow alone on a plane with a note saying she didn't want him anymore is facing a lawsuit for child support, which is scheduled for trial in March.
Torry Hansen refused to cooperate with investigators after the boy, then 7, reached Russia in April 2010 with a note stating he had psychological problems. She was never charged criminally, but her adoption agency filed a lawsuit in Tennessee, where she was then living, seeking child support.
The suit is scheduled for trial March 27 in a Shelbyville court.

“Sex Meter” – Huffington Post
The city of Bonn, Germany, collected around $20,000 last year from prostitution taxes paid via automated curbside pay stations or "sex meters." Under the new program, sex workers are required to purchase tickets to work the streets at night, the Associated Foreign Press reports.
While a number of other German cities collect taxes from prostitutes working in brothels, Bonn became the first city to extend general prostitution taxes to workers soliciting clients on the street when itintroduced the sex meters last August, according to the AFP.
The sex meters charge prostitutes a flat nightly rate of $8.65 for the right to solicit clients on the street between 8:15 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to The New York Times. City estimates place the number of sex workers at around 200, with about 20 of them working the streets on any given night.
It was unclear whether the city would recoup costs from installing the Siemens-built machines around the city, which cost $11,575 for installation plus the cost of security guards hired to protect workers using them, according to The New York Times.
In addition, the city paid to construct special wooden garages, or "consummation areas," near the machines where customers can park their cars and have sex, Reuters reported.
City officials were pleasantly surprised when the machines earned around $400 the first weekend and went on to earn around 14,000 Euro, or $18,200, by the year's end, according to the AFP.
"We are satisfied with that and plan to continue levying the tax," a city spokeswoman told AFP.
Between taxes paid by prostitutes in brothels and on the street, Germany collected around $326,000 last year.

Drug Deal With The Cops – Huffington Post
Two accused drug dealers were collared on Friday after one of them allegedly sent a text offering to sell 200 Percocet pills - directly to a cop in Meriden, Connecticut.
Cops told NBC Connecticut that Lorraine Apuzzo, 19, mistakenly sent the text to an officer at about 3 p.m. The quick-thinking cop played along and set up a buy the same day, when undercover officers met with Apuzzo and her buddy, 25-year-old Frank Boemmels at a Westfield mall.
At some point between texting cops and allegedly offering them drugs at the mall, Apuzzo got suspicious and tried to drive away, according to CBS. But detectives said they cornered the pill pusher and busted open her windows to get her out of the car.
Not only that, but Apuzzo was apparently trying to short the undercover cops on the deal - arresting officers said they found only 100 Percocets on her.
Cops cuffed Boemmels a short time later in the mall. Both were charged with criminal attempts to commit sales of narcotics in a school zone, and Apuzzo was slapped with first-degree reckless endangerment and interfering with an officer. She was released on a $50,000 bond and Boemmels remains in the slammer on a $150,000 bond.

Refund to Garth – Fox News
CLAREMORE, Okla. –  An Oklahoma hospital in country singer Garth Brooks' hometown must return his $500,000 donation because it failed to build a women's center in honor of his late mother, jurors ruled Tuesday.
Jurors sided with the country star in the breach-of-contract lawsuit he filed against IntegrisCanadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon. Brooks said he thought he'd reached a deal in 2005 with the hospital's president, James Moore, but sued after learning the hospital wanted to use the money for other construction projects.
The hospital had argued that Brooks gave it unrestricted access to the money and only later asked that the hospital build a women's center and name it after his mother, Colleen Brooks, who died of cancer in 1999.
The jury included several of the singer's fans, but all said they could judge the case fairly.
During the trial, Brooks said he thought he had a solid agreement with Moore, whom he said initially suggested putting his mother's name on an intensive care unit. When Brooks said that wouldn't fit his mother's image, Moore suggested a women's center, the singer testified.
"I jumped all over it," Brooks told jurors in tearful testimony. "It's my mom. My mom was pregnant as a teenager. She had a rough start. She wanted to help every kid out there."
Brooks said he gave the gift anonymously, as he does with all charitable donations.
During cross-examination, an Integris lawyer highlighted statements that Brooks made in a deposition after he sued. Brooks said couldn't say whether the women's center was promised, or whether his mother's name would be attached to an existing center.
"I don't remember," Brooks said in the deposition.

Tuesday, Jan24 / Klum is Single, Moose Fight, Twitter

Good morning to you, today is Tuesday, January 24, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Tuesday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Sports
The Patriots defeated the Ravens and then the Giants defeated the 49ers.  So the Pats and the Giants will face off in 2 weeks for the Super Bowl.

The fames coach of Penn State, Joe Paterno died this weekend after a long battle with cancer.

Election
Gingrich was the big winner of the South Carolina primary Saturday. So after 3 primaries we have 3 winners.  I guess we will see how things turn out in Florida.

Heidi Klum a single woman – Daily Caller
It looks like Heidi Klum is saying “auf Wiedersehen” to her husband, Seal.
The German supermodel and Grammy-winning singer announced their separation on Sunday night, People reports.  It seemed like one of Hollywood’s strongest unions: The couple were together for nearly a decade — which is at least three decades in Hollywood years.  But the marriage couldn’t sustain distance, with the couple’s home in L.A. and Klum shooting Project Runway in New York City.
Marital strain reportedly came from Klum’s success in her career, while Seal’s musical career hasn’t hit a high note since the 1990s. (We can’t remember anything he’s done since “Kissed By A Rose”).
The couple have three children together: Henry, 6, Johan, 5, and Lou, 2. Klum’s daughter, Leni, 7, is from a previous relationship.

Same Sex Marriage – NPR
Citing the Golden Rule and saying that "all men and women in our state [should] enjoy the same privileges that are so important in my life," the last legislator needed to pass same-sex marriage legislation in Washington State announced this afternoon that she will support the measure.
Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, a Democrat, posted a statement about her decision here.
Her support gives proponents "the 25 votes needed for passage" in the state's Democratic-controlled Senate, according to The Seattle Times. There already was enough support in the state House (also Democratic controlled) and Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) has said she would sign such legislation.

Moose Fight – Huffington Post
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An 85-year-old Alaska woman used a grain shovel to fend off an agitated moose that was stomping her husband.  George Murphy says his wife saved his life.  The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/yahDtF) says the 82-year-old pilot, who flew for three decades for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, was hiking with his golden retrievers near the Willow airport Friday. He saw the moose and dove in the snow, but the moose started stomping him.  His wife, Dorothea, who is 5 feet tall and weighs 97 pounds, grabbed a big shovel and hit the moose in the body and head.  She ran for help, and Murphy was rushed by medical helicopter to an Anchorage hospital. He was in good condition Monday with a gash to his head.

Congressional Twitter – The Hill
Rep. Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) signed onto Twitter on Monday. His Twitter handle is @RepAdrianSmith.  “I am excited about expanding my use of social media, which has proven to be an effective way of sharing important and timely information about the critical issues facing our country,” Smith said in a statement released by his office.  He has only tweeted once so far: “Welcome to my official Twitter account. Be sure to follow me to stay connected. Proud to represent NE's 3rd District in Congress! Pls RT”  Smith’s debut means that all three of Nebraska’s House representatives and both senators are now accessible by Twitter.
