Tuesday, Jan10, Tattle Tale, Occupy Rats, Nicotine

Good morning to you, today is Tuesday, January 10, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Tuesday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Election Update
Today is the big primary in New Hampshire. The tiny town of Dixvile Notch opened the polls for their 9 registered voters at midnight last night with Huntsman and Romney each getting 2 votes, Paul and Gingrich getting 1 vote each and NoBama capturing the 3 Demorat votes. We will be bringing you the final score tomorrow on the Wednesday Wake Up Call

Sports
Alabama won the National Championship against LSU 21-0

Tattle Tale – Huffington Post
Well, at least his son believes honesty is the best policy.  A St. Petersburg police report obtained by theTampa Bay Times says a fugitive's 2-year-old son told authorities his father was hiding in the family's attic.  Valdet Gjeloshi was wanted for violating probation on a battery charge.  Gjeloshi's wife, Megan Merschen, had told police that he was not in the house. But when his son said otherwise, police soon found and handcuffed the unlucky man on the run.  Gjeloshi was charged with a parole violation and for resisting arrest without violence, according to Pinellas County Sheriff's records.  The 29-year-old's rap sheet includes arrests for battery and DUI, according to arrest records.  This isn't the only time a 2-year-old has helped cops pursue law breakers.  Last Year, the Deccan Chronicle reported that a 2-year-old boy told police that his father had murdered his wife.  There are also plenty of other examples of kids turning in their parents for crimes such as drug possession and molestation.
Occupy Rats – Washington Post
The rat population around the two Occupy D.C. camps at McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza has “exploded” since protesters began their vigil in October, according to Mohammad N. Akhter, the director of the District’s Department of Health.
Akhter said in an interview Monday that city health inspectors have seen rats running openly through both camps and spotted numerous new burrows and nests underneath hay-stuffed pallets occupiers are using for beds. Both campsites had working kitchens for weeks until last week, but protesters at McPherson Square voluntarily closed down theirs after health inspectors pointed out unsanitary conditions during an informal monitoring visit.
Akhter said his concerns about the health and safety at the camps prompted him to order a city-wide review of conditions there, including input from health inspectors, mental health professionals, experts on the homeless and others. He is reviewing their findings this week.
“I’m very supportive of their rights and ability to demonstrate but I have concerns about their personal safety,” Akhter said.

Smoke Out Memory Loss – ABC News
The nicotine patch designed to help people quit smoking can also improve memory in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, a small clinical trial found.
The trial involved 67 non-smokers with MCI, which is considered an intermediate between normal aging and dementia. People with MCI are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
Half of the patients wore a skin patch that delivered 15 milligrams of nicotine per day; the other half wore a placebo patch. The study was double-blinded, meaning both the patients and the researchers were unaware who was getting the drug.
After six months, patients who wore the nicotine patch regained 46 percent of their age-adjusted "normal performance" on long-term memory tests, whereas patients in the placebo group worsened by 26 percent.
Nicotine stimulates receptors on neurons involved in learning and memory, called cholinergic neurons. In Alzheimer's disease, those neurons die off. In an earlier study, Newhouse showed intravenous nicotine could improve memory in Alzheimer's patients.

Monday, Jan09, Christmas Gift, Oops I Have A Knife, Photo, Royal Birthday

http://youtu.be/iLm0607VIU0

Good morning to you, today is Monday, January 09, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the guru of gossip and we are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central and you are watching the Monday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Christmas Gift – Huffington Post
Sarah Burge, the woman known as the "Human Barbie," gave her daughter Poppy a bizarre stocking stuffer this Christmas: a liposuction voucher worth about $11,000.  The 7-year-old was reportedly excited about the gift, and mom is confident the money will be well spent one day in the future.  In an interview with the British tabloid Closer, Burge disclosed her thoughts about what some are calling an inappropriate gift for a young girl.  "She asks for surgery all the time. She wants to look good and liposuction is one of those procedures that will always come in handy," Burge told the magazine.  But the liposuction voucher isn't the first cosmetic surgery gift certificate Poppy's received from her mother.  Last year, the self-proclaimed little "diva" received a voucher for breast augmentation, which she can redeem at age 18, if she so chooses.  "I think it's great because you can change yourself if you're not happy," Poppy said in a video interview that aired on daytime talk show "The Doctors."

Oops, I have a knife – Huffington Post
Jack Persyn, 13, was in chess club before class when he discovered a short knife in the bag he brought to school, which had been purchased at a yard sale, station WXIA reports.
After telling the Lanier Middle School teacher that he accidentally brought the weapon to class, the station reports he received 4 days of in-school suspension, a punishment his father, Bill Persyn, says is overkill.
"There was never a safety issue," Persyn told WXIA. "No harm was done. It was a genuine honest mistake, yet he got pulled out of class for four days. I can see a one hour detention if they had to do something, but this is nonsensical."

Yearbook Photo – Fox News
A Colorado high school senior says she was the subject of censorship after her peers on the yearbook staff decided her photo was inappropriate to use as her senior portrait, Fox 31 Denver reports.
Durango High School student Sydney Spies, 18, submitted a photo of herself wearing a short yellow skirt and a black blouse that exposes her shoulders and midriff.
The four yearbook staff members say the clothing Spies is wearing in the photo violates the school dress code,

Royal Birthday – Fox News
LONDON –  The former Kate Middleton turns 30 on Monday -- but royal fans expecting a lavish birthday bash to mark the milestone will be disappointed.
Palace officials say the Duchess of Cambridge's birthday celebration will be a "low-key and private" affair, appearing to quash press reports that she will see off her 20s with a fun '80s themed party, complete with karaoke, in a throwback to her more carefree bachelorette days.
The choice of a muted event seems appropriate: After all, the duchess is not just starting the fourth decade of her life -- she is also embarking on her career as a future queen, charged with renovating a monarchy that has become somewhat creaky with age.
"She's done very well, playing a very good supporting role to Prince William and complementing him as part of a team," commentator Robert Jobson said of her first few months as a royal.

Friday, Jan06 - Ramnit / Mistaken Identity / Cookies

Good morning to you, today is Friday, January 06, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the guru of gossip and we are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central and you are watching the Friday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Election - Politico:
MEREDITH, N.H. — Newt Gingrich is ramping up his attacks on Mitt Romney, but he’s taking a much more ginger approach to Rick Santorum — the other Iowa top finisher with whom he’s competing for conservative votes.
Gingrich is explicitly complimentary of Santorum, and said repeatedly Thursday that he won’t criticize the former Pennsylvania senator.
About Romney, though, Gingrich has no such qualms.

Facebook Ramnit – Huffington Post
Facebook users have a new threat to look out for. It's called the "Ramnit" worm, and it has compromised 45,000 user accounts.
According to Seculert Cyber Threat Management blog, Ramnit was discovered in 2010; the following year, the software was used by hackers to infect 800,000 computers and "gain remote access to financial institutions, compromise online banking sessions and penetrate several corporate networks."
Now, Seculert researchers report, the worm is targeting Facebook users located primarily in the U.K. and France.
"We suspect that they use these [Facebook] credentials to continuously spread the Ramnit malware through Facebook," Co-founder and CTO of Seculert Aviv Raff told PCWorld. When hackers take control of a Facebook account, they can use the profile to spam other users with malicious links that further spread malware like Ramnit.

Mistaken Identity – Fox News
A teenage girl from Texas who went missing two years ago has turned up in Colombia after being mistakenly deported by U.S. Immigration authorities.  At only 14-years old, Jakadrien Turner ran away from home in the fall of 2010 after the divorce of her parents and the death of the grandfather. She made her way from Dallas to Houston where she was arrested by police for theft.
Turner gave Houston police a false name, saying that she was an adult from Colombia with no legal status in the U.S. Throughout her criminal legal proceedings in Texas, the 14-year old non-Spanish speaker maintained her false identity and was convicted in a Texas state court., according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) statement provided to Fox News Latino.
At no time during these criminal proceedings was her identity determined to be false, the statement added.
Texas officials handed Turner over to ICE, where she allegedly continued to maintain that she was from Colombia throughout her immigration court proceedings. “As is standard protocol, criminal database searches and biometric verification were conducted and revealed no information to invalidate her claims,” said Barbara Gonzalez, ICE’s press secretary, in an email.  “She was ultimately ordered removed from the U.S. by aDepartment of Justice immigration judge.”
With the help of the Dallas police, Turner’s grandmother, Lorene, found her on Facebook and learned that she was cleaning a large house in Colombia. U.S Federal authorities found the address and U.S. embassy officials asked Colombian police to pick her up.

Cookie Time – Huffington Post
It's Girl Scout cookie season again, and this year there's a new girl in town to celebrate the Scouts' 100th anniversary. Welcome to the clique, Savannah Smiles. The Girl Scouts Cookies websitedescribe the cookie:
Celebrate the anniversary of the Girl Scouts with these bite-sized, lemon-wedge cookies dusted in powdered sugar and bursting with lemon flavor. Enjoy these delightful treats, remember where Girl Scouts began ...and smile.
Little Brownie Bakers, the company that manufactures the cookie, is pretty jazzed up about the cookie:
Each year, thousands of Girl Scouts visit the founder's historical home, a National Historic Landmark in Savannah. In the time-worn rooms, each girl considers how, 100 years later, Juliette Low's story encourages her to dream big and do great things with her life.

That's why we are so proud to offer this special cookie that will delight customers and remind girls of their rich heritage and unlimited future.

Thursday edition of Wake Up Call

Good morning to you, today is Thursday, January 05, 2012 and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the guru of gossip and we are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central and you are watching the Thursday edition of Wake Up Call.

Well we have been off the air for a while, had some personal issues to take care of but that is now well behind us, so here we go.

News:

Election:
If you live in the US and have a pulse, you know that there is an important election going on.  And the people who know that better than anyone are the citizens of the state of Iowa.  Capturing the lead in the Iowa Caucus was Mitt Romney and only 8 votes behind him and practically coming out of nowhere was Rick Santorum.  Sliding comfortably into the 3rd place spot was Ron Paul.  Bailing out of the race was Michelle Bachmann and then there is Jon Huntsman who needs to bail out of the race.  Acquiring a handful of votes while not even campaigning for the presidency was Herman Cain.  Maybe if Herman was 7 foot tall, green and had a flat head he might have gotten a few more votes.

Who do you like in the campaign?  Leave me a comment and we will talk about it.

Guns and New York:
Have you heard about the story of the woman from East Tennessee who went to New York packing a pistol, went to the 9/11 memorial, saw a sign that said “No Guns”, tried to do the right thing, went to the police to check her gun and in turn they arrested her.  Reports are now out that she had drugs in her purse and we ain’t talking about Midol either.

Can I Shoot:
A teenage mother shot and killed an intruder after a 911 operator said she was allowed to defend her infant son and herself with force.
Sarah McKinley, 18, killed Justin Martin with a single gunshot wound on New Year's Eve when he forced his way into her Blanchard, Okla. home and came at her with a long hunting knife, ABC News reports

Wine and Sex:
From NY Daily News dot com. – Tracy Miller

Women who drink two glasses of wine a day have better sex than non-drinkers:
Go ahead and say yes to that glass of wine - especially if you're on your way to the bedroom.
A new study found that women who drink one or two glasses of wine a day have better sex than those who don't drink at all.
Researchers from the University of Florence, Italy, surveyed 800 women between the ages of 18 and 50 on their sexual satisfaction, using the Female Sexual Function Index, according to the Daily Mail. The index is used by doctors to assess women's sexual health, based on factors including arousal, orgasm, satisfaction and pain.
Women who drank two glasses of wine a day scored an average of 27.3 points out of a possible 36 on the satisfaction scale, while those who stopped at one glass scored a 25.9 average. Non-drinkers averaged a 24.4.
"Historically, the aspects of wine and sexuality have been well known since the time of Ancient Greece," the study's lead author, Dr. Nicola Mondaini, told the Daily Mail. Female sexual dysfunction, on the other hand, is still "highly unexplored," she said.

April 02 Wake Up Call - Bad Service Soapbox

Last night I thought I would be nice to the wife and offered to take care of dinner for the family. She was slightly disappointed that she was not going to get to cook but took me up on the offer. So I loaded the family into the ole family wagon and took everyone to one of our 10,000 restaurants we have in this city. Now the reason I chose this particular one is because on Thursdays, kids get to eat for 99 cents, and when you have three hungry boys to feed, that’s a deal! Now I do not want to get off on a soapbox here but…

I was rather disappointed when I left this place of business last night. As we entered the establishment we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome from a slightly attractive young lady and that is where the good part of our experience ended. After being shown to our table we waited for SEVERAL minutes until finally a manager came over and asked if she could take our drink order, which at that time we had already decided on what we wanted to eat and informed her that we wanted to order food as well. Taken by surprise, she hesitated and then decided to go ahead and take our food and drink order. A few minutes later our server finally arrived and delivered our drinks and informed us that our orders had been placed. Eventually our food arrived, delivered by our server, which was a good thing because we needed refills on our drinks so she took care of that. As we were eating our dinner, our server checked on us once. We all finished our dinner and was chatting with each other and after several minutes we decided we were ready to depart and realized we had not seen our server in quite a long time. After waiting several more minutes we finally flagged down another server and asked if he could find our server so that we could get our check and pay. Shortly she arrived and put the check on the table at which point I handed her my credit card. She promptly returned with my card and tickets to sign which I did leaving absolutely NO tip! Now I usually will leave a tip of some amount after getting poor service if the food is good, but however the food at this place is not all that great and the only reason we go is because it is cheap and can get halfway decent service usually by an attractive young lady.

I am not going to say that service is always bad at all places, but there is a decline in the quality of service in the “service” industry. Now I can complain about this because I work in the service industry and have for a long time, I have also worked in the food industry both fast food and sit down type restaurants and I know the standards we were held to several years ago as far as quality and promptness of service and it is just not there these days especially among the high school, college age generation and I fear that it is going to decline even more if we are not careful. It seems kids these days just want a check and heaven forbid if you ask them to work for it. Moms and dads just hand over to their kids any and everything they want and do not instill the sense of responsibility that goes with earning what you have and taking pride in what you do.

Take a look around and think back into history, each generation gets lazier and lazier and it is because we let them sit around the house and play on the gameboy or computer and do not make then get out and do anything anymore. Face it, what would your kids reaction be if you slapped an eight foot sack on their shoulder and told them to pick a row of cotton, for that what would your reaction be if someone handed you a cotton sack and pointed the way to the cotton field. Our great-grandparents were not too good to do it so why are you? Have you seen the movie Wall-E? We laugh and think that is a cute kiddie movie but that is where we are headed if we are not careful. But come to think of it, they did get good service. However that is just my opinion, you can take it and 99 cents and go order off the dollar menu at McDonald’s, if you can get someone to take your order. Just don’t ask for fries, that is another 5 minutes.

Quote of the day:

I think I may have used this before but I am going to use it again because it fits with our topic of discussion.

March 30 Wake Up Call - Foundations

In these 3 chapters Christ starts out by proclaiming blessings or beatitudes, after that he lays out some very basic principles for us to live our lives by, there is also the golden rule as we call it, a description of what judgment will be like and then at the end he makes a very point blank and powerful statement.

Matthew 7:24-28

Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will compare him to a wise man, which built his house on a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and does not fall because it was built upon a rock. And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does not do them, shall be like a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

I find it interesting that Christ used the analogy of building a house. I am going to take a guess and say it is because he was trained as a carpenter when he was a boy. If you will notice with me, the key factor in the two houses he talks about is the foundation. If you will think with me this is not the only time he used construction terms in making his point. In Matthew the 16th chapter while talking to his apostles he stated he was going to “build” his church and talked about the foundation of the church and that it would be built upon a rock. Now I am no Greek scholar but I have been told the Greek word used by Christ to describe the foundation the church was to be build on is the word “petros” meaning a boulder or bedrock. So Christ saw the importance in building on a solid and firm foundation.

For the next few minutes I want to think of some reasons why it is important for us to build our lives on the teachings and the gospel of Christ. As I mentioned a moment ago, if one will take the principles found in Matthew 5, 6, and 7 and apply them to their life, Christ compares this person to a man who would builds his house on a rock. The wind, rain and floods Christ talks about represents the trials, persecutions, and various issues we are faced with in our lives, and if we have our lives built on a rock, then as the house that was built on a rock, it will not fall.

So why is this important? Well, most usually end up finding themselves a spouse. If I am trying to build my personal life on a firm foundation chances are I am going to find someone who is trying to build their life on a firm foundation. Then after a while we as married couples usually have a child or two or three and we instill our values and beliefs, or at least try to, into our children which in turn creates a spiritual or Christian home, which the Apostle Paul talks about in Ephesians 5 and 6.

Last if you have a Christian person or individual who finds a mate who is a Christian and raises their children in a Christian home and you put several of these homes together with the purpose of worshiping and praising God, then you will have the strong and faithful church build on a solid foundation that Christ talks about in Matthew 16. Every day I try to better myself so I can better my family and hopefully encourage and support the people I worship with every week. We can not make it in this world alone, we need help and I can think of no better way to find the strength and encouragement I need to keep going than worshiping with my fellow brothers and sisters every week.

I hope you have found these thoughts to be encouraging and uplifting.

On a personal note before I close, I have a very special and dear friend who is dealing with some issues right now so I would like to solicit your prayers for this person. For the privacy of this person, I am not going to give their name but if you will pray for “Mike’s friend” I think God will know who you are praying for.

Thanks for watching today, I sincerely hope you have enjoyed the program, have a wonderful day and God bless.
