Friday, Jan20 / Cougars, Drunk Police, McMouse

Good morning to you, today is Friday, January 20, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of satire, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the TGI Friday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Let’s Go Cougars! – Fox News, Todd Starns
A Utah school district decided not to select a cougar as the mascot of a new high school partly because school officials and some parents believed the word is disrespectful to women.
Students in the Canyons School District named the cougar their top choice to become the mascot of the new Corner Canyon High School. The school is expected to open in 2013.
However, district officials overrode the student vote after complaints that that the word “cougar” is offensive and derogatory towards women.
“We heard from folks who were worried about the connotation of the word ‘cougar’ as it pertains to the current vernacular — in a derogatory manner,” Jennifer Toomer-Cook, a spokesperson for the school district told Fox News & Commentary.
In pop culture, the term “cougar” refers to a sexually aggressive middle-aged woman who attracts younger men.
However, the cougar is also a large mountain cat — that also happens to be the mascot for Brigham Young University — along with three other Utah high schools.
Toomer-Cook said that was the chief reason the district decided to override the students’ vote — even though it was the highest vote-getter out of more than 1,000 suggestions.
Instead, school officials decided to select the “Chargers” as the new mascot. Toomer-Cook said they wanted to have a unique mascot name.
“Instead of going to a place where people were seeing something potentially divisive, go to a mascot that could more easily unify,” she said. “No other Utah school has Chargers as its mascot. The board members were also saying this presents an image of strength and captures a little bit of the area’s culture.”
Drunken Experiment – The Blaze
Typically, employers discourage inebriation in the workplace. But in this case, Florida law enforcement officials actually paid for employees to get drunk. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (the state’s version of the FBI) apparently shelled out $330 on Jim Beam whiskey, booze and Doritos back in October.
Now, before you get too frustrated, you should know that reports claim the fiesta was thrown in an effort to test out the reliability of an alcohol breathalyzer machine (even with that description some of you may still be frustrated — especially after you read the read of the story). In sum, 15 employees attended the shindig to test out the Intoxilyzer 8000, a tool that has come under fire as being unreliable.
The group, which included crime analysts, staff assistants and police officers consumed the alcohol, was recorded as members blew into three of the units. Additionally, they had their blood drawn and sent to a lab. The Herald Tribune:
The $8,000 study, put together in three days, was part of a broader push to save the reputation of the embattled Intoxilyzer 8000, FDLE records show. And in December, FDLE’s alcohol testing guru Laura Barfield came to a Sarasota County courtroom for a hearing and presented results of the drunken employee experiment to a panel of judges, saying it proved the machines were accurate.
But the study might not even be worth the $330 bar bill.
At the hearing, judges deciding the fate of the machine in Sarasota and Manatee counties seemed skeptical of even considering the study, in part because bloodwork was still at the lab and the examination was not yet finalized.

McMouse in the McBuns! – Huffington Post
Karruim Demaio, a former McDonald's employee, shot a cell phone video of a mouse trapped in a bag of Big Mac buns at a Philadelphia McDonald's. In the video below, the frantic mouse tramples across many different buns. According to the Demaio, the manager ordered the employees to serve the buns, and has previously wiped off mouse droppings from buns and then served them. When Fox 29 asked the manager, she denied the claims.
"I was working there from October of 2010 to January of this year. There hasn't been a time when we couldn't go in the back and see mouse droppings on the bread," Demaio told Fox 29.
According to the Philadelphia Health Department, this particular McDonald's is not in satisfactory compliance with health standards; the owner is investigating the claims.

Thursday, Jan19, Witchy Woman Soapbox

Good morning to you, today is Thursday, January 19, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I am coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Thursday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

A pagan mother's challenge to the distribution of donated Bibles at a local school has prompted the Buncombe County Board of Education to reevaluate its policies regarding religious texts.
Ginger Strivelli, who practices Witchcraft, a form of Paganism, said she was upset when her 12-year-old son came home from North Windy Ridge intermediate school with a Bible.
The Gideons International had delivered several boxes of the sacred books to the school office. The staff allowed interested students to stop by and pick them up.
"Schools should not be giving out one religion's materials and not others," Strivelli said.
According to Strivelli, the principal assured her the school would make available religious texts donated by any group. But when Strivelli showed up at the school with pagan spell books, she was turned away.
"Buncombe County School officials are currently reviewing relevant policies and practices with school board attorneys," the district announced in a written statement. "During this review period, no school in the system will be accepting donations of materials that could be viewed as advocating a particular religion or belief."
I don’t want to get on a soapbox here, but this chaps my hide and it is about high time that we stand up for what WE believe in and quit bowing down to the liberal, left wing, donkeys and the ACLU.  We have become so desensitized as a nation and culture that we do not stand up for what we believe in anymore yet we let the rest of the world tell us what we are going to tolerate in the name of “equality”.  Look here Ms Strivelli, if you do not want your son reading the Bible, fine, tell him not to read it, burn it, shred it, cast a spell on it whatever you want because I don’t care.  I’ll make a deal with you, I will not force your kids to read the Bible if you do not force my kids to read spell books.  It is really that simple, there is absolutely no need for “laws”, “regulations”, “policies” or whatever to determine what our kids do and don’t, participate in.

I am a religious man, I am a Christian in its truest a purest meaning, I attend worship services as well do my wife and kids.  I firmly believe in practicing my religion in the way I live my life and am more than happy to share my beliefs with you and will listen to you as you share your beliefs with me.  Again, I do not force my feelings on anyone, but if you want to learn more about my beliefs I will freely lay it on ya.

Just because you do not like what I do does not make it OK for you to try to make it not legal so you do not have to come in contact with it.  We all share this globe and have to live on it together.  My advice to you is to suck it up and get on with your life and I will get on with my life and I will have my Bible in hand while I am doing it.

But of course that is just my 2 cents worth, I could be wrong.

Election
Huntsman is out of the race, which is no real big loss.  He has however put his support behind Romney.  I just wonder how this is going to affect Romney’s popularity.  Did you watch the debate last night?  I was unable to as I was at work but from the tweets I have seen Gingrich was the big winner.

Football
Ravens, Patriots, Giants and 49ers were the big winners this weekend in the NFL playoffs.

WikiNoGo – Fox News
SAN FRANCISCO –  Can the world live without Wikipedia for a day? The shutdown of one of the Internet's most-visited sites is not sitting well with some of its volunteer editors, who say the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.
"My main concern is that it puts the organization in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said editor Robert Lawton, a Michigan computer consultant who would prefer that the encyclopedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge. "Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."
Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time Tuesday and the organization said it would stay down for 24 hours.
Instead of encyclopedia articles, visitors to the site saw a stark black-and-white page with the message: "Imagine a world without free knowledge." It carried a link to information about the two congressional bills and details about how to reach lawmakers.

Can You Hear Me Now? – Fox News
BALTIMORE – Serious injuries involving pedestrians wearing headphones have more than tripled since 2004, a U.S. study showed.
Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people often were hit by vehicles because their music blocked out horns or sirens alerting them to danger.
In 70 percent of cases, the headphone-wearing pedestrians died as a result of the injuries they sustained from being hit by traffic.
The researchers studied the data of 116 accidents involving pedestrians wearing headphones between 2004 and 2011. The number of incidents rose from 16 in 2004 to 47 in 2011.
"Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears," lead author Dr. Richard Lichenstein said. "Unfortunately, as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases."
The study, published in the journal Injury Prevention, found that young men were most at risk, with 68 percent of the 116 victims being male and 67 percent under the age of 30.
Plastic Underwear – New York Times
KITZBÜHEL, Austria — The latest front in nefarious performance enhancement in sports: underwear.
A fit of confusion has spread through competitive skiing in recent days after a Slovene skier who finished second at a major event in Austria was accused of wearing plastic undergarments that might have given her an unfair aerodynamic advantage. The Swiss ski federation lodged a complaint with the sport’s governing body, and an examination of the skier’s underwear was conducted. Fruit of the Loom these were not.
A ruling was made over the weekend: the clothing was permissible, though officials advised female skiers not to wear it because of health concerns. Apparently the amount of plastic in the underwear might prevent a skier’s skin from breathing properly.
The ruling, however, did not extinguish the dispute; it has merely moved to the men’s side of professional skiing.

Chicken Nuggets – Fox News
Burbank, Calif. –  A Los Angeles woman was arrested last week for offering sexual favors in exchange for chicken McNuggets, according to Burbank police.
Khadijah Baseer of Los Angeles allegedly opened customers’ car doors while they were in the drive-thru of a Burbank McDonald's.
A witness reported Baseer's activity to police and she was arrested on suspicion of prostitution.

Burger Delivery – USA Today
Burger King, the No. 2 burger chain, has quietly begun testing home delivery of its burgers, fries and other sandwiches since fall at four of its restaurants in the greater Washington, D.C., area, with an eye on expanding beyond that.
Should home delivery catch on for the burger giants — as it has for the pizza kingpins — it could be an industry changer. But it runs counter to long-held consumer perception that fast-food burgers and fries travel poorly — and don't warm up well in the microwave. It also would require millions of hungry folks to change their at-home eating habits. "There are some real food-quality issues here," says Ron Paul, president of research firm Technomic. "But there's no question that consumer expectation for having things delivered has risen."

Thursday, Jan12 / Big Bang Wish / Sex Study / Deer Birth Control / Breastfeeding on Sesame Street

Good morning to you, today is Thursday, January 12, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Thursday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

Big Bang Wish – Huffington Post
Like most seven-year-old boys, Maxwell Hinton enjoys explosions. Unlike most seven-year-old boys, he was able to set one into motion himself. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the organization that grants wishes to young people with life-threatening diseases, Hinton pushed the button that set a series of detonations, which took down an enormous ConAgra grain mill in Huron, Ohio, reports Fox Toledo. (Although such an event is often referred to as an implosion, the term is "actually a misnomer because that would require an inverse explosion," according toThe Daily Mail.)
Hinton, who lives in Fresno, CA, gained his passion for explosions through television. "I watch 'MythBusters' and they inspired me to blow a building up," he explained. The boy suffers from neuro-blastoma, a malignant cancerous tumor that that commonly affects young children. The Daily Mail reports that Hinton "has undergone treatment and is now recovering from the condition." The mill needed to be razed in order to make room for a long-planned riverfront development project. Grain silos, also attached to the structure, will be knocked down in the coming weeks.
30,000-40,000 people turned out for the event. ABC-7 reports that after the dust had settled, and the applause died down, Maxwell simply said, "I had a great time."

Sex Study in an MRI Machine – ABC News
Kayt Sukel was an undergraduate research assistant in a neuroscience lab at Harvard University before she decided to jump right into science -- literally.
She crawled inside a functional MRI machine, where she was tethered with a mesh net harness to hold her head still, and sexually stimulated herself to climax in that awkward setting -- not just once, but twice, so researchers could measure her brain activity.
It was a scene even she admits felt straight out of a porno film, but Sukel said she knew she was contributing to the scientific understanding ofwhat happens to the brain during orgasm. And it made great fodder for a book.
"I did it," she writes. "I now had a great story if anyone ever asked me to name the strangest place I'd had an orgasm. And I had helped science while doing it. Triumph for all parties concerned!"
Sukel, 37, writes about that and much more in her new book, "Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships," which examines how neurobiology shapes how we love and bond with others.
Other books have been written about "the nether regions and what is going on downstairs," but this well-researched book helps readers find out "what's going on upstairs."
"Sex is between your ears," Sukel said. "Our brain is really an important part of orgasm."

Deer and Birth Control
The National Park Service is considering sharpshooting and euthanasia to reduce Rock Creek Park’s growing deer population. White-tailed deer are overgrazing on the park’s tree seedlings and native plants, keeping the forest from regenerating, the officials said. The National Park Service released the latest version of its deer control plan on Tuesday.  In addition to sharpshooting and euthanasia, birth control is an alternative Though they have yet to officially decide, park officials prefer a combination of lethal and non-lethal options instead of a single method, the report said.  The National Park Service plans to donate the resulting deer meat to local food banks. A Montgomery County deer sharpshooting programdonated about 17,500 pounds of food to the Capital Area Food Bank last November.

Breastfeeding on Sesame Street – Time
What’s not to like about lovable furry old Grover and his pals Elmo, Zoe and Oscar the Grouch? If you’re a member of the robust movement that saucily refers to itself as NIP — “nursing in public,” natch — the answer is plenty.
Coming on the heels of a well-attended national “nurse-in” that sought to normalize breast-feeding in Target stores, NIPers are now lowering the boom on Sesame Street. Apparently a generation ago, the kiddie show incorporated tasteful shots of nursing mothers who explained that “lots of mothers feed their babies this way” and that breast milk was “warm and natural.” More recently, however, when a baby gets fed on “The Street,” it seems to be courtesy of a bottle. Not that there’s anything wrong with bottle-feeding, the NIP moms are quick to point out. But bottle-feeding to the exclusion of breast-feeding, especially at a time when even the U.S. Surgeon General has called for more support for breast-feeding mothers?
“You’re My Baby” from a 1980s segment of Sesame Street, which includes a mother breast feeding
That doesn’t make for particularly sunny days. And it’s prompted more than 5,600 people to sign a petition to “bring breastfeeding back to Sesame Street.”

Wednesday, Jan11, UPS Crook, Binge Drinking, UFO's, Used Underwear

Good morning to you, today is Wednesday, January 11, 2012, and I am your humble host, the sultan of sarcasm, the purveyor of non-pertinent information, the troublemaker extraordinaire and I are coming to you recorded from the Eagle’s nest here at wake up central with news you can’t use here on the Wednesday edition of The Morning Wake Up Call.

UPS Man – Fox News
GREENBELT, Md. –  A man awaiting trial in the deaths of a mother and her daughter has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for crimes committed during dozens of armed home invasions and burglaries.
Jason Scott was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt. A judge said he'll be remembered as one of the "most hated" people in the county and that he was a "tsunami" of crime.
The 28-year-old was convicted in July of crimes including armed carjacking, producing child pornography and stealing firearms. Prosecutors say he admitted to dozens of burglaries and other crimes.
Prosecutors say Scott used a database at the UPS facility where he worked to target the homes.
Scott faces separate murder charges in the deaths of a mother and her daughter in March 2009

Binge Drinking on the Rise – Fox News
Binge drinking rates in the U.S. are at a much higher rate than previously thought, according to a report released Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC found that more than 38 million Americans binge drink four times a month—consuming an average of eight drinks each time.
And it’s not just young adults. Although it is more common between the ages of 18-34, those 65 and older reportedly binge drink more often—five to six times a month.
The frequency of binge drinking is higher in households with an income of $75,000 or more. But the disturbing data found that the highest number of drinks consumed per occasion is by people living just above or below the poverty line, with eight to nine drinks per occasion.
Binge drinking is defined by the CDC as consuming five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women on a single occasion. Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, said he thinks it is disturbing that Americans are drinking nearly double the amount of what is already considered too much.
“It is alarming to me that Americans are not being smart in knowing how to respect the effects of alcohol,” Alvarez said, “it’s putting their health in jeopardy.”
According to the CDC, binge drinkers are at a higher risk for many health and social problems, including car accidents, violence, liver disease, certain cancers, heart disease, sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies.
Overconsumption of alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of death, with more than 80,000 fatalities in the United States each year.
UFO’s
During the first week of 2012, UFO reports streamed in from around the world as numerous eyewitnesses described and videotaped strange things in the sky.
Whether they were balloons, conventional aircraft or misidentified astronomical objects, the new year of UFO sightings is off and running as the worldwide proliferation of digital video cameras and phone cams makes it easier than ever to photograph unusual sights in the sky above us.
The Colorado-based Mutual UFO Network, the largest UFO investigative organization in the world, received many reports of UFOs during the first week of the year from eyewitnesses in 36 out of 50 states.  The 14 states that haven't reported in so far are Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming -- but the year is young.

Used Underwear – Huffington Post
Zimbabwe may have an 80% unemployment rate, but one thing the country absolutely won't stand for is its impoverished citizens wearing used undergarments.  According to the Zimbabwe Mail, the country's finance minister Tendai Biti recently announced a total ban on the importation and sale of secondhand underwear.  "If you are a husband and you see your wife buying underwear from the flea market, you would have failed. If I was your in-law, I would take my daughter and urge you to first put your house in order if you still want her back," Biti told the paper.  The law went into effect on Dec. 30, 2011 calling forthe Zimbabwe Revenue Authority to charge 40 percent duty, 15 percent value added tax and a $3 penalty for every kilogram (2.2 lbs) of imported underwear, according to The Guardian.
It is believed the ban will help address health concerns as well as work to protect the country's domestic textile industry.

Tattle Tale – Huffington Post
Well, at least his son believes honesty is the best policy.  A St. Petersburg police report obtained by theTampa Bay Times says a fugitive's 2-year-old son told authorities his father was hiding in the family's attic.  Valdet Gjeloshi was wanted for violating probation on a battery charge.  Gjeloshi's wife, Megan Merschen, had told police that he was not in the house. But when his son said otherwise, police soon found and handcuffed the unlucky man on the run.  Gjeloshi was charged with a parole violation and for resisting arrest without violence, according to Pinellas County Sheriff's records.  The 29-year-old's rap sheet includes arrests for battery and DUI, according to arrest records.  This isn't the only time a 2-year-old has helped cops pursue law breakers.  Last Year, the Deccan Chronicle reported that a 2-year-old boy told police that his father had murdered his wife.  There are also plenty of other examples of kids turning in their parents for crimes such as drug possession and molestation.
Occupy Rats – Washington Post
The rat population around the two Occupy D.C. camps at McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza has “exploded” since protesters began their vigil in October, according to Mohammad N. Akhter, the director of the District’s Department of Health.
Akhter said in an interview Monday that city health inspectors have seen rats running openly through both camps and spotted numerous new burrows and nests underneath hay-stuffed pallets occupiers are using for beds. Both campsites had working kitchens for weeks until last week, but protesters at McPherson Square voluntarily closed down theirs after health inspectors pointed out unsanitary conditions during an informal monitoring visit.
Akhter said his concerns about the health and safety at the camps prompted him to order a city-wide review of conditions there, including input from health inspectors, mental health professionals, experts on the homeless and others. He is reviewing their findings this week.
“I’m very supportive of their rights and ability to demonstrate but I have concerns about their personal safety,” Akhter said.

Smoke Out Memory Loss – ABC News
The nicotine patch designed to help people quit smoking can also improve memory in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, a small clinical trial found.
The trial involved 67 non-smokers with MCI, which is considered an intermediate between normal aging and dementia. People with MCI are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
Half of the patients wore a skin patch that delivered 15 milligrams of nicotine per day; the other half wore a placebo patch. The study was double-blinded, meaning both the patients and the researchers were unaware who was getting the drug.
After six months, patients who wore the nicotine patch regained 46 percent of their age-adjusted "normal performance" on long-term memory tests, whereas patients in the placebo group worsened by 26 percent.
Nicotine stimulates receptors on neurons involved in learning and memory, called cholinergic neurons. In Alzheimer's disease, those neurons die off. In an earlier study, Newhouse showed intravenous nicotine could improve memory in Alzheimer's patients.
